De La Salle University held the naming ceremony for the Evelyn D. Ang – Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Health Technologies (EDA-IBEHT) on August 8 at Shangri-La the Fort, Taguig City. The event was attended by Mr. Philip Ang, Chairman of Evelyn D. Ang Scholarships and Charities, Inc., and Chairman of Nickel Asia Corporation, along with Ms. Carmina Ang, Executive Vice President of EDA Scholarships & Charities, Inc., and other family members and friends of Mr. Philip Ang.
The ceremony began with a Eucharistic celebration officiated by Fr. Alejandro Mijangos, LC, which set a reflective and reverent tone for the day’s proceedings and commemorated Ms. Evelyn D. Ang’s birthday.
The EDA-IBEHT was established to address the need for common service facilities and support in health technologies development. It serves as a platform for the exchange of information between engineering and medical professionals and provides capacity-building programs to develop experts in biomedical engineering research. This event was more than just the naming of a new institute; it was a celebration of the lasting impact that Evelyn D. Ang’s legacy will have on education, innovation, and healthcare, ensuring that her vision continues to inspire and transform lives.
DLSU President Br. Bernard S. Oca FSC delivered the welcome remarks, expressing the University’s deep gratitude to the Ang family for their unwavering support. Br. Bernie highlighted how this collaboration has resulted in the establishment of the Evelyn D. Ang Endowment for the College of Science, the naming of the EDA-IBEHT, and the future Evelyn D. Ang Hall at the DLSU Laguna Campus. “The Evelyn D. Ang Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Health Technologies will be a beacon of innovation, where researchers, faculty, and students come together to drive revolutionary transformations in global healthcare,” he remarked.
The ceremony continued with updates on the ongoing developments at the EDA-IBEHT and the Evelyn D. Ang Hall. Dr. Jason C. Ongpeng, Executive Director of the Campus Development Office, provided an update on the construction of the Evelyn D. Ang Hall, noting that it is progressing well and on track for completion. Following Dr. Ongpeng’s update, Dr. Nilo Bugtai, Director of the EDA-IBEHT, elaborated on the institute’s mission and vision. He underscored the institute’s commitment to accelerating the development of biomedical devices and health technologies through the provision of state-of-the-art facilities and services to research universities and institutions. He further noted that by 2026, EDA-IBEHT aims to be at the forefront of biomedical device innovation and research in the Philippines, recognized as the premier center for researchers, scientists, clinicians, engineers, and innovators focused on biomedical technologies.
The ceremony concluded with a heartfelt message from Ms. Carmina Ang, Executive Vice President of EDA Scholarships & Charities, Inc. She expressed her family’s deep appreciation for the partnership with DLSU, noting that it aligns seamlessly with the core values of EDASCI—integrity, collaboration, and empathy. “Today, as we celebrate the naming of the Evelyn D.
