The De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Jins capped off their journey to the podium with their heads held high as they finish their campaign in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 87 Women’s Collegiate Taekwondo Tournament yesterday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
With their final record at 3–2, the Lady Jins have secured their overall spot at third place, replicating their UAAP Season 85 and Season 86 finishes.
The Lady Jins came into their first game against the National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs with a 2–0 record, while NU went in with 1–0 under their belt. The Bulldogs unleashed a dominant run as they took the first three sparring matchups. The Lady Jins were able to fight back with one to stop their opponents from scoring further in the fourth. But ultimately, they were unable to cage the Lady Bulldogs as they bowed down in defeat, 1–6.
Eager to bounce back after their first loss of the season, they sought to regain momentum. The Lady Jins faced the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagles with their sights set on returning to their winning ways. The women’s taekwondo team delivered as they stopped at nothing to get their win, even successfully sweeping the game after winning all seven of their sparring rounds. The Lady Jins’ showcase of skill as they dominated the Blue Eagles ensured them of their podium finish, 7–0.
In undoubtedly their biggest and most challenging matchup of the season, the Lady Jins returned to the mats one last time to face the three-peat seeking defending champions, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Tiger Jins. Both teams were tugging for the lead, exchanging scores with one sparring after the other. But it all came down to a decisive matchup in the seventh round after the Lady Jins were able to clinch the sixth and bring it to a deadlock of 3-all. In the end, it was the Tiger Jins that prevailed, the final round with a decisive run to take the win home and keep their record spotless, 3–4.
The Lady Jins officially closed out their season with pride after taking home the bronze trophy for Taft. Dhivine Lerado received the Rookie of the Year award; while Philomena De Leon, Argie Lamasan, and Mary Alcantara bagged their respective silver medals. Meanwhile, Jade Papa and Allyah Eusalan received their medals for bronze.
Moving forward, with their relentless drive and potential, this achievement is only the beginning as DLSU Lady Jins continue to push themselves toward even greater heights.
