On June 24 and 25, 2022, the Department of Theology and Religious Education of De La Salle University held the 10th National Conference on Catechesis and Religious Education (NCCRE) with the theme: “Religious Education, Human Development and Synodal Church: Promise, Issues and Challenges”.
Very recently, the Church introduced a synodal vision for its members. This development opens up discussions towards the prospects and promise of being synodal for church life. The conceptual emphasis towards inclusivity and human participation in being synodal appeals to everybody as it may incorporate reflections of faith, the aspirations, values and issues affecting different sectors especially women and youth. Human participation is essential to both church life and human flourishing. The burning issues of our time including ecological and health crisis hinder humanity from attaining meaningful human development. These issues are linked to human agency. As a culminating reflection for the 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines, it is important to understand Church synodality in the context of Theology and Religious Education vis a vis human development. For this conference we turn to the following questions for further reflection: What does synodality bear for human development and aspirations? How should Catechesis be like when the Church turns inclusive? What are the implications of synodality for Theology and Religious Education?
