DLSU Honors the Legacy of the Tiu Family with the Unveiling of Commemorative Markers

De La Salle University held a ceremony to unveil the commemorative markers of the Carlos L. Tiu School of Economics (CLTSOE) and Carter Carlos Tiu Mechanical Engineering Laboratory last November 29.

DLSU President Br. Bernard Oca FSC and Tiu family patriarch and honoree Mr. Carlos Tiu led the ceremonial unveiling, which began at the Carter Carlos Tiu Mechanical Engineering Laboratory marker located at Velasco Hall. The Machine Shop marker commemorates Carter Carlos G. Tiu ✝(BS Mechanical Engineering, 2001).

The ceremony, also attended by members of the Tiu Family alongside university administrators, faculty, student leaders, and guests, continued with the unveiling of the Carlos L. Tiu School of Economics markers, located on the ground floor of St. La Salle Hall, the CLTSOE Dean’s Office on the second floor, and the CLTSOE Department Office on the third floor. The school honors Mr. Carlos L. Tiu, a philanthropist and visionary leader dedicated to empowering Filipino youth through education. As Chairman of Akari Lighting and Technology Corporation, Mr. Tiu’s guiding principle, “to transform the lives of every Filipino, one bulb at a time,” reflects his commitment to fostering economic innovation and research.

Following the unveiling ceremonies, the celebration continued at the Learning Commons of the Henry Sy Sr. Hall. In his message, Mr. Christopher Tiu, CEO of Akari Lighting and Technology Corporation, shared a heartfelt reflection: “These markers will not only serve to remind us of the names etched in the corners of this University but, more so, as a reminder of our family’s steadfast commitment to endlessly uphold the mission, vision, and core values of De La Salle.”

Br. Bernard Oca FSC emphasized how this tribute—timed to coincide with Mr. Carlos Tiu’s 86th birthday—reflects the family’s dedication to academic excellence, innovation, and sustainability. These values, he noted, align seamlessly with DLSU’s mission to advance global excellence and build a greener future.

A video presentation recapped the event, highlighting the Tiu Family’s transformative contributions. Adding to the festive spirit, a video of the Animo Christmas 3D wall mapping display, powered by NXLed, was shown, symbolizing the University’s dedication to innovation, creativity, and its enduring Lasallian values.

The Carlos L. Tiu School of Economics and the Carter Carlos Tiu Mechanical Engineering Laboratory stand as enduring testaments to the Tiu Family’s generosity and commitment to nation-building. These facilities will serve as pillars of learning and innovation, inspiring generations of students and leaders to come.
