The De La Salle University (DLSU) Green and Lady Woodpushers finally concluded their campaigns in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 87 Chess Tournament yesterday at the Adamson University (AdU) Gym.
For their last round in the Women’s Chess Division, the De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Woodpushers (16 pts) unleashed an impressive sweep on the Adamson University (AdU) Women’s Chess Team (2 pts), ending the match with a score of 4.0–0.0.
Woman National Master and Team Captain Francois Magpily secured the Lady Woodpushers’ first triumph of the day with a commanding victory over AdU’s Angela San Luis on Board 1, and Arena Grandmaster Sara Olendo followed suit by outplaying Christine Hernandez on Board 2. Meanwhile, La Salle’s Rinoa Sadey and Checy Telesforo rounded out the sweep with impressive wins over Mariane Flora and Phoebie Arellano on Boards 3 and 4, respectively.
Adding to their stellar performance, the women’s team also garnered multiple individual accolades to showcase the team’s prowess. Magpily and Telesforo earned silver on Boards 1 and 5, respectively, while Rinoa Sadey secured bronze on Board 3.
With this dominant sweep, the DLSU Lady Woodpushers proudly clinched the silver medal, which marked the team’s triumphant return to the podium after their heartbreak back in Season 86.
Over on the Men’s Chess Division, the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Woodpushers (11 pts) surrendered their spot on the podium to the Far Eastern University (FEU) Men’s Chess Team (12 pts) after concluding their final match with a score of 1.0–3.0.
Starting the match day, Cyril Telesforo faced a challenging match on Board 1 before ultimately falling to Mark Jay Bacojo’s precise tactics and strategic maneuvers. The difficulties of the team continued as Jester Sistoza and Daniel Lemi also succumbed in their respective matches against Jeth Morado on Board 3 and Istraelito Rilloraza on Board 4.
However, the Green Woodpushers found a silver lining in their final outing of the season. On Board 2, Angele Biete delivered a standout performance after overcoming Dale Bernardo in a decisive match to claim the team’s final victory of the season.
This win served as a fitting conclusion to the Green Woodpushers’ campaign, and much like the Lady Woodpushers, the Green Woodpushers also earned individual accolades to cap off their season. Angele Biete claimed silver on Board 2, while Daniel Lemi secured bronze on Board 4.
Despite falling short in their final match, the DLSU Green Woodpushers demonstrated significant improvement in their standings this season. The team’s progress signals exciting potential and raises hopes for finally securing a podium finish in the upcoming season.
