A TREE IS A TREE FOR ALL: AN INTERACTIVE MODULE ABOUT MANGROVES
The Output of the Service-Learning Component in the Environmental Philosophy Course in the Undergraduate Program
The aim is to create an interactive program for young people in Lian, Batangas, that fosters a care and preservationist attitude towards the environment, particularly mangrove trees. Education goes beyond acquiring knowledge, encouraging students to immerse themselves in nature. Students become active participants in activities that safeguard the environment. Upon completion, they are equipped to advocate for preserving mangrove trees, recognizing their value as part of their living community.
This research will utilize the SMART Goals, which are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely, to make the goals of this project feasible.
- Specific
This research plan aims to develop an interactive and practical educational program for teachers in Lian, Batangas, which can be used to teach children aged 6-9. The educational program will be implemented annually for three months, preferably during the summer when students are free. The program aims to educate children about the importance of mangrove trees, their threats, and how they can be protected and preserved. It will also include fun activities to help students appreciate the beauty and significance of mangrove trees, like observing their growth and learning fascinating facts about them.
- Measurable
The success of this research paper will either be measured by how well the community implements the proposed educational plan or by how it inspires future researchers to develop their module for teaching the value of mangrove trees to children. To execute the educational plan, we aim to enroll at least ten students from the community and commission one or two teachers to teach the modules. We will measure the module’s effectiveness by assessing whether the community still has abundant mangrove trees and their environmental advocacy remains compelling. We hope the community’s leaders and residents continue fighting to preserve the environment.
- Achievable
The action research plan is doable as learning materials are prepared, and the focus is on executing the educational plan. The community’s support is needed to identify teachers, coordinate with parents, and teach children. Some materials may need funding, such as printing modules, supplying mangrove seedlings, and giving incentives. However, the plan is practical as it only requires the community’s willingness to invest time and effort in organizing these classes and activities.
- Relevant
Education helps children develop critical thinking skills and encourages them to be more creative when addressing problems. It also fosters a sense of engagement and action within their communities and towards the environment, enabling them to impact positively. Such modules can lead to a sustainable lifestyle and a healthier environment for children.
Project Monitoring and Evaluation
Once two weeks have passed since the implementation, the teacher will evaluate whether the students have achieved the module’s learning objectives. The teacher will communicate this information to the administrative committee and recommend possible improvements based on their findings.
