La Salle University is experiencing an increase in incoming class size and applications for the upcoming fall semester for the first time in three years.
This includes a stronger academically qualified applicant pool and an uptick in applications among those who identify as students of color and as the first in their families to attend college.
“The demand for a Lasallian education is great,” said Angela Polec, Ed.D., La Salle’s Vice President of Enrollment, Marketing, and Communication. “These application trends are an acknowledgment by prospective students and their families of La Salle’s return on investment—one of the nation’s best value propositions in higher education—and our institutional commitment to tremendous professional outcomes for our students. We are excited to see these early indicators of a strong incoming class next fall.”
Academic performance
La Salle anticipates seating a class of first-year students in Fall 2022 with strong academic credentials. The average and median GPAs, as well as the SAT and ACT test scores of admitted first-year students are higher than those in last year’s new student population, Polec said.
First-generation students
Roughly of La Salle’s applicants for Fall 2022 identify as the first in their families to attend college. Last year, that first-generation student percentage was closer to 46%. Both represent increases over the 40% of La Salle’s student population who are first-gen students. La Salle has long maintained a commitment to first-generation college students, a distinction recognized nationally.
Student diversity
Nearly 58% of the University’s Fall 2022 applicants identify as students of color—an increase from 53% last year. Among transfer applicants, more than 73% are from students of color—an increase from 70.8% last year.
Completed applications among students who identify as Hispanic and Black or African-American all have increased from last year’s totals, Polec said. Overall, she added, applications among students of color have increased 10%, year over year.
At present, 42% of La Salle’s full-time undergraduate students are students of color. Last fall, La Salle seated one of its most diverse classes ever with students from traditionally underrepresented groups comprising 52% of its new class across all programs.
